How can the rules of a game shape a performance?

Over three months, UYT ensemble members created an original piece inspired by many kinds of theater games, including comedy improv, mimicry, and tableau. They built the work around playful structures and creative rules, exploring how games can guide action while still leaving room for surprise.

The ensemble drew on their interests and unique skills. They also found inspiration in the city’s first publicly funded playground just blocks away, studio visits with Abrons AIRspace residents Cherrie Yu and Shamar Watt, dance improvisation, and their own family rituals.

At a time when media platforms often turn play into something profit-driven, UYT’s artists celebrate the power of playing together in real time. In this live performance, they share their imagination, humor, and remarkable ability to create joy.

About Urban Youth Theater

A core program of Abrons Arts Center since the 1990s, Urban Youth Theater (UYT) provides young New Yorkers the opportunity to learn about theater making.

A diverse cohort of teen artists–selected through an audition process–is mentored by a professional theater artist who facilitates a devised theater curriculum that includes workshops ranging from improvisation to script writing. Urban Youth Theater participants are paid a stipend for their completion of the program.

In addition to learning about theater making, UYT participants gain valuable social and professional development skills, all while building community with other like-minded teens.
